Chapter 5: Consistency is Key

As I sit here eating Starburst jellybeans, I can’t help but feel accomplished. No, that’s not sarcasm. This week I’ve completely dominated my workouts! Tuesday I felt so good during/after the workout I actually ended up doing more than I had programmed. What’s happening to me?! Coming off last week, I didn’t know if I could keep doing this. The last two weeks of workouts have just sucked. There’s no other way to say it. I’ve been doing them, but I really had to force myself and I was miserable the whole time. It was pretty pathetic. I don’t know why the last couple of weeks have been so hard, but it’s refreshing that this week has been the exact opposite.

New Measurements

We took my measurements last Tuesday. I didn’t know what to expect. Physically, I feel better, but I wasn’t sure if that would show in my results. Turns out, I’ve lost almost 2 inches (1.9685 to be exact) in my hips and a whopping 1 centimeter in my waist. I mentioned before that I’ve noticed my pants fitting better. Now I know it’s not just in my head.

I’ve also lost a ½ pound of fat! I was so pumped when I saw the results. It was definitely encouraging and helped to motivate me to keep going. As far as my weight goes, it hasn’t changed, but that doesn’t matter. This is why you can’t solely rely on the scale! If I was simply gauging my success by checking my weight, I would’ve quit. There are so many more important factors to consider.

Rucking

In addition to my normal workouts last week, I also went rucking. I went to the YMCA park with my family and we walked around the trail. The biggest challenge for me is getting used to the weight pressing down on my shoulders. I can’t quite get comfortable. The crazy part is that I used to walk all over OSU with more than 20lbs in my backpack. Art history books are huge! I guess it’s been so long my body just isn’t used to it anymore. That’s the only thing about this 5k ruck that worries me. I’m hoping the more I train with it the more comfortable it’ll become.

Accomplishments

There have been a few noticeable changes for me in terms of my capabilities. When I started this I was doing incline bench presses with 12.5lb dumbbells in each hand. The first time I completed 3 sets of 12 reps Michael literally had to lift my arms for me in order for me to finish my last rep. I’ve steadily been increasing my weight and now I’m up to 17.5lbs. I even did one set yesterday with 20lb dumbbells.

I’ve also gone from doing farmers carry with 35lb kettlebells to 53lb kettlebells. I carried 53lbs in each hand yesterday for the first time and it was awesome! Talk about feeling accomplished! Being a visual person, I love being able to really see the change and progress. That’s been the most rewarding part of this for me, so far.

Final Thoughts

Over the last few weeks I’ve learned that consistency is key. If you don’t feel like working out, just push through it and do it anyway. Some workouts are going to be great and others aren’t and that’s normal. There’s definitely a sense of accomplishment when you complete a workout you didn’t want to do in the first place! I’m so glad this week has been better and I’m just hoping it continues on from here.
